Exhibition Introduction
The proliferation of diversified media and formats such as computer video games, interactive CD-ROM games and Internet games, helped to create an independent category in its own right, under the broader classification of "Contemporary Art." To put this into a real-world context, Japan exports games products to neighboring Asian countries worth nearly US$10billion per annum. The South Korean government has invested US$9 million to cultivate "games experts" and even in Taiwan the games industry claims to produce an annual output valued at in excess of NT$7 billion (US$200 million). Although these figures pale when compared to the US$20 billion the industry generates in the US, the sub-culture that this promotes can no longer be simply ignored.
From Nintendo's handheld video games to "Play Station" and today's Internet games, set designs, acousto-optic effects, rules and plots have been the framework mapping out the parameters of "game culture." This sensation of giving oneself a new identity has been elevated still further by the Internet games now available in the New Millennium. The new you can choose to be a virtual comrade-in-arms, to experience the responsibility and honor of fighting together as part of a virtual unit. This is a virtual life, exists as part of real memory but can only be satisfied or enjoyed in an alternative games dimension, effectively becoming "virtual" protective coloration.
Feng Mengbo is Chinese avant garde art world's wunderkind. He is also one of the pioneers of artworks based on computer games. Games provide a virtual world in which individuals are free to choose their own identities and create their ideal being. This virtual life exists as a part of real memory, but it can only be enjoyed in an alternative games dimension. The language of technology with which Feng speaks so fluently is the key to enter his “Theater of Happiness”.

Opened in May 2001, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA Taipei) is the first museum in Taiwan devoted entirely to contemporary art practice. Our mission is to provide access to contemporary art from Taiwan and around the world to an increasingly globally-oriented, technologically-savvy audience.
The building which houses the museum is a designated Municipal Historical Relic. Built in the late 1920s, this Japanese colonial-style red brick structure served as an elementary school for two decades before a fifty-year stint as the site of the Taipei City Hall.
MOCA Taipei exemplifies a coming together of contemporary art, historical architecture, and high technology – resulting from the joint efforts of the Taipei City Government, the local community, artists, and corporate supporters.
As the world moves toward globalization, digitalization and technologically advancement – Contemporary Art provides an arena for artistic exchange and for the expression of cultural identity. From its inception, the museum has always recognized as main task to transcend the boundary that exist between art and the community at-large, constantly looking for new ways where art and the community interact, and striving to bring art beyond the confines of the museum walls and into the everyday lives of the community. MOCA Taipei will continue to move in this direction in the future. By stimulating inter-disciplinary creativity through multifarious and diverse artistic exhibition and performances, we hope to bring art into our community, and ultimately, to catalyze a spirit of innovation in the city of Taipei.
