On July 9th, MOCA Taipei will be launching a new exhibition. Curated by Natasha Lo, the exhibition will include 62 artworks created by 52 artists from around the globe. These diverse and exciting artworks all come from Japanese contemporary art collector Miyatsu Daisuke’s personal collection. This will also mark the first time, since MOCA Taipei opened its door a decade ago, to work with one collector for the arrangement of a contemporary art exhibition.
Different from other collectors that may be affluent in their wealth, Miyatsu Daisuke is just an ordinary “salary man”. However, driven by his passion for art, in the short span of 17 years, he has collected over 300 diversely ranged contemporary artworks. His collection is a reflection of the developmental pattern in contemporary art for the past half a century. As a civilian collector, in order to be able to collect artworks that he is drawn to, in addition to living frugally with everyday expenses, in the past, he has also taken on a night-shift job working at a hotel concierge. Everything collected by Miyatsu Daisuke are due to his personal inclination, and he has never sold any part of his collection to others.
The first gallery for this exhibition houses six earlier works by Yayoi Kusama, including the piece that ignited Miyatsu Daisuke’s passion for art collecting – “Infinity Dots” and also “Infinity Net”, the most expensive piece in his collection currently. As for the last and also the largest gallery, on exhibit is the project that Miyatsu and more than ten artists have been working on since 1999 - the “Dream House”, and the collaborative project is still being carried out till this day.
The main architectural structure for the “Dream House” is designed by French artist, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, and also gradually added are Shimabuku’s design of the garden and the bathroom walls, Yeondoo Jung’s wallpaper, bookshelf designed by Taro Shinoda, full-length mirror by Yayoi Kusama, lantern by Jun Yang, chair by Surasi Kusolwong, mural by Peter Pommerer, and more. Additionally, Miyatsu has asked Yoshitomo Nara 13 years ago to create a folding screen painting (a set of five pieces). This piece will be finished before this exhibition opens and will be shipped by air to be shown for the first time. Through this dream-building project, in addition to presenting the house’s structure, space, decorations, furniture, etc…, more importantly, it is about the continual relationships and interactions between people.
Also to be exhibited for the first time at this exhibition is “Window Projection for Daisuke” by Icelandic artist, Olafur Eliasson, which he has agreed to make for Miyatsu in 2000. Also included is “Gum Monster” by Tanaka Koki, which is compiled together by 3000 rolls of tapes to create a 5-meter high monster. Furthermore, Miyatsu also has been paying attention in the recent years to art created by young Asian artists, and he has also collected works by Taiwanese artist, including Lee Chia-Yu, Chen-Jing-Yuan, Wu Chang-Jung, and Yu Cheng-Ta. Other internationally renowned artists included in this exhibition are Tony Oursler（USA）, Paul McCarthy（USA）, Felix Gonzalez-Torres（Cuba/USA）, Jan Fabre（Belgium）, Cai Guo-Qiang（China）, Apichatpong Weerasethakul（Thailand）, Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba（Vietnam/Japan）, Ming Wong（Singapore）, and more.

Opened in May 2001, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA Taipei) is the first museum in Taiwan devoted entirely to contemporary art practice. Our mission is to provide access to contemporary art from Taiwan and around the world to an increasingly globally-oriented, technologically-savvy audience.
The building which houses the museum is a designated Municipal Historical Relic. Built in the late 1920s, this Japanese colonial-style red brick structure served as an elementary school for two decades before a fifty-year stint as the site of the Taipei City Hall.
MOCA Taipei exemplifies a coming together of contemporary art, historical architecture, and high technology – resulting from the joint efforts of the Taipei City Government, the local community, artists, and corporate supporters.
As the world moves toward globalization, digitalization and technologically advancement – Contemporary Art provides an arena for artistic exchange and for the expression of cultural identity. From its inception, the museum has always recognized as main task to transcend the boundary that exist between art and the community at-large, constantly looking for new ways where art and the community interact, and striving to bring art beyond the confines of the museum walls and into the everyday lives of the community. MOCA Taipei will continue to move in this direction in the future. By stimulating inter-disciplinary creativity through multifarious and diverse artistic exhibition and performances, we hope to bring art into our community, and ultimately, to catalyze a spirit of innovation in the city of Taipei.
