Ch'ien Mu, a celebrated scholar, is highly regarded for his many contributions to both the studies of Chinese literature and Chinese history. Mr. Ch'ien taught at Beijing University from 1930 to 1937. After the Civil War, he founded the New Asia College in Hong Kong. When Mr. Ch'ien finally retired in Taiwan, he made his residence at Su Shu House, which is located at 72 Linghsi Road in Waishuanghsi, Shihlin District, Taipei. Mr. Ch'ien named his residence Su Shu House to commemorate his mother because the building where she had lived was called Su Shu Hall. Mr. Ch'ien and his wife had lived in the house for 22 years; shortly after moving out Su Shu House, he passed away. On January 6th, 1992, Su Shu House was dedicated as a research library. Yet, due to the construction work, the Ch'ien Mu House was closed for a year and became the property of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Taipei. On December 31st, 2001, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Taipei asked Soochow University to take charge of the Ch'ien Mu House. On March 29th, 2002 the Ch'ien Mu House reopened to the public.
According to the Taipei City Government, the memorial house will serve to keep alive the memory and works of Mr. Ch'ien. The collection of Ch'ien's writings and researches is kept in the memorial house. We are fortunate to have Mrs. Hu Mei-chi, the late scholar's wife, donate many books, scripts and furniture, which will be on display. The living room, study and bedroom have been preserved as they were when Mr. and Mrs. Ch'ien were livinghere.
